To me, nature is color itself. The colors of nature that change from time to time depending on the season, place, or time are endless. I digest the many colors of such nature to create a new form of abstract nature that has changed into my own color and shape. I call it Internal Landscape.
What I realized while expressing the abstract natural world inside human beings is that there is something much larger than nature inside us. I saw this in space; In other words, we have our own world, our own universe, inside. In this universe that exists within me, what exists in this world? What am I living with and what am I moving by and what am I making work about? The work starts with these questions. In fact, in my inner world, in my art world, i don't know exactly what's going on, even in the real world outside. I'm not sure what my job is, but it's definitely the process of finding something that exists. It is the process of finding my self that exists in the deep abyss. I accept the colors of real nature inside and express my universe and my world based on my own color and a new form of abstract nature. This is the series of works, Internal Universe, which began at the end of 2018.
This Internal Reflection Series, derived from the Internal Universe, is a series of works created by projecting the image of the subject in my image into the inner universe. In fact, this series was inspired by an experience on a foggy day while I was waiting at a traffic light. As I gazed at the silhouette of a distant building through the mist, I found myself momentarily questioning whether I was looking at the real world or at my own inner world. In this series, by actively intervening in my inner self and showing the silhouette of the subject directly, the viewer causes a calm emotional agitation. Also, if the Internal Universe was a complete abstraction, in this series, Internal Reflection, my universe becomes the subject's background, or it exists inside the subject. In other words, the work exists somewhere at the intersection of abstraction and representation—abstract while remaining representational, and representational while remaining abstract.
An additional presence emerges in my recent works. Chu, which means balance, also has a destructive meaning, so it is a device to always maintain a calm emotional state, fearing that my inner world will be destroyed if I am swept away by any emotion and further tilted. This weight is expressed as a floating sphere without a line in the Internal Reflection. This sphere is a planet that exists in my universe and at the same time balances the inner world.
Animals appear in the current work, but in fact, there can be quite a few subjects to be expressed in the work. People, animals, landscapes, buildings, etc. In fact, all the real-world subjects in my image become my works. I'm bringing this image of images into my work and this is my new work series Internal Reflection.
